NUR357 Assessment Task 3
For this task, you will engage with a case study involving a set of recorded conversations/interviews between a community health nurse, a client (Archie Sampson) and(member/s of) his family. Drawing on these interactions (and the Module 3 content and learning activities), you will analyze the strengths-based nursing approach and plan strategies for promoting the wellbeing of Archie and his family. Your submission will include the following three components:
- Critique: a written critique of how the nurse engaged in a therapeutic relationship and approach, and if/how this demonstrated the principles of strengths-based nursing and primary health care (approximately 400 words)
- Evaluation of strengths: a written summary evaluating the identified strengths of the client (Archie), his family and community, and any areas for improvement, thereby creating a context for change (approximately 300 words).
- Wellbeing Plan: a strengths-based wellbeing plan with/for Archie and his family (approximately 300 words).
This template is where you will complete/record your response to all three parts of this assessment task. The template should be viewed and completed alongside the Assessment Task 3 Information Page, which provides further instructions about the task and what is required/expected for each part. Links to the case study videos are also available on this page.
After adding/completing your response to each part or section below, please save the template as a Word or PDF file and submit it for marking to the AT3 Submission Folder in MyLO.

Part 1: Critique |
After viewing the simulated nurse-client conversations (videos), prepare a written critique of how the nurse engaged in a therapeutic relationship and approach, and if/how this demonstrated the principles of strengths-based nursing and primary health care (approximately 400 words). Please refer to the AT3 Information Page for further instructions and guiding questions for this section. |
The simulation illustrates a conversation between a community health nurse, a client; Archie Sampson, and his family. Archie Sampson is involved in a therapeutic relationship with the nurse in which strength-based nursing (SBN) and primary health care (PHC) practices are demonstrated. Despite the important therapeutic approach practices, some areas need improvement. Fostering a Therapeutic RelationshipThere exists a therapeutic relationship between the nurse and the client in this simulation. First, the therapeutic relationship is illustrated through active listening which offers a foundation for emphatic communication between the nurse and the client (Tustonja et al., 2024). It helps the nurse establish trust and rapport. For example, the nurse acknowledges the client’s issues and encourages him to share openly. As a result, a sense of respect and safety is established which conforms to the SBN practices. The PHC practices of client-centred care are also demonstrated through the application of open-ended questions which prompt the client to share. Archie gets the freedom to express his feelings, thoughts, and experiences in his own words making him feel valued and heard. However, areas of improvement exist to examine the client’s strengths comprehensively. For example, in addition to applauding the client’s decision to participate in his care, the nurse should have explored the resources or coping interventions that could have improved the therapeutic engagement. Empowerment and EngagementThe patient and his daughter actively take part in the decision-making process which demonstrates active participation in care that potentially enhances the health outcomes (Scherr et al., 2022). This conforms to the PHC principle of community involvement and the SBN pillar of patient self-determination. A perfect example is when the nurse requests the client’s daughter to offer insights about her father’s situation, which promotes a family-centred perspective. Despite this, the nurse could have initiated a discussion about how the client and his family could have utilized their strengths to achieve the respective health outcomes, leveraging the strengths-based nursing approach. Alignment with SBN and PHC PracticesThe simulation illustrates various SBN values such as advocacy, respect, and promotes collaboration in care. The nurse also utilizes a holistic approach focusing on the patient’s physical health in addition to his social and emotional health (Ambushe et al., 2023). PHC principles are illustrated through equity and comprehensive care although the relationship could be better by determining appropriate community resources to help the client and his family. |
