NR 602 Week 1 Discussion
Marginalized People
Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising scholarly literature. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This discussion will support the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- CO 5: Identify and address healthcare needs of marginalized childbearing and childrearing families. (POs 3, 5)
Due Date
Initial posts are due to the discussion board by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Instructor and peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).
Total Points Possible
This discussion is worth a total of 100 points.
Preparing the Discussion
Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the assignment. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.

Sample Discussion Post
Identify and describe three actions you can take as an NP to mitigate the social impacts on marginalized women and/or children.
As a future nurse practitioner, one of my top objectives is to eliminate biases placed on marginalized communities, especially women and children; thus, actions taken by a nurse practitioner to mitigate the social impacts on marginalized women and their children are:
· Make it a priority to involve them in their care and include them in decision-making; in the efforts to pursue patient-centered care the patient needs to participate in healthcare goals and decision-making, so they are and feel included. While focusing on the clients at the center of care, one must understand the client’s concerns and if possible, offer community resources to assist with modifiable problems and solutions (Maxwell et al., 2019).
· Many marginalized communities often feel discounted or ignored due to language barriers; since the language is not understood oftentimes, they will avoid environments that don’t prioritize sharing information in a way that they can understand. As a nurse practitioner, I would ensure interpretive services are consistently available whether in person or televised to ensure understanding of education, knowledge sharing, and decision-making.
· Even if the client can understand the knowledge being shared and assisted in feeling somewhat included in their health care if it is noted that the provider holds bias towards them, that would halt the learning process. It must be an absolute objective of the nurse practitioner to self-assess to ensure the elimination of biases they may hold towards people of other cultures, who speak other languages, of different socioeconomic status, or may not share the same ideals and goals. It is essential to realize that providing substandard healthcare exacerbates the problem of inequality. The most disadvantaged individuals in our society often receive inadequate or disrespectful treatment, which leads to unnecessary delays in accessing medical services when they are most required. Therefore, it is imperative to take swift action to guarantee everyone receives the highest-quality care, regardless of their social status or background (Sacks & Peca, 2020).
Discuss the role of federal, state, and local health policy in the marginalization of women, children, and childbearing families.
The roles that the federal, state, and local governments play when introducing and overturning healthcare policies that continue to marginalize women, children, and families of child-bearing age is a domino effect that maintains a separation for disenfranchised families. For example, the US Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe vs Wade, a 1973 Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion within the first 2 months of pregnancy, forced women to seek care for unwanted pregnancies due to a lack of financial need or residence; pregnancies that may pose deleterious consequences to the health of the mother or pregnancies due to incest or rape, in areas in which the quality of care post-procedure cannot be monitored (Dyer, 2023). The state then relies on government funding and grants to support health care programs for both the mothers who may not have insurance for prenatal and postnatal care or means to supply their child’s nutritional needs. Locally the mothers and childbearing families should be taught about resources that can be used to supply nutrition and state-covered health care for the children but are often not.
Identify one policy that impacts marginalized groups (include whether the policy is at the federal, state, or local level).
On the 20th of January 2021, President Biden signed Executive Order 13985 “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government” (Title 3, 2023). This policy is on the federal level.
Discuss how the selected policy impacts marginalized groups either positively or negatively.
The federal policy aims to promote equality in healthcare, housing, and the workplace for marginalized groups. The government recognized the urgent need to distinguish and protect underserved communities, especially marginalized women, and children. Consequently, a policy was signed to highlight the need for equity and support for these deserving communities, ensuring their success.
Accurately analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles from evidence with no more than one short quote (15 words or less) for the week.
We must use our tools to give voice to vulnerable populations’ challenges for promoting health (Galea & Vaughan, 2019).
