The rigor of a DNP program requires that each learner maintain personally developed strategies that can be used to minimize stress in order to maintain a healthy balance. One important area to consider is self-care. Discuss ways in which you will recognize signs of imbalance or stress as a DNP learner. Explain what type of self-care routines or activities you can use in these instances to help you better achieve balance. (This response does not require research support.) In response to your peers, discuss what strategies they are using that could work for you or provide suggestions to peers for self-care.

Sample Discussion Post 

DNP learners experience high stress levels compared to other nursing learners pursuing nursing sciences. Stress can result in health change, disease, poor academic performance, and withdrawal from the doctorate program. Ultimately, this can affect the quality of care that patients receive. Since DNP learners cannot avoid most of these stressors, it is important to develop coping strategies evidenced to decrease stress-induced injuries.

To recognize the signs of stress and imbalance as a DNP learner, the author will develop internal and external daily, weekly, and monthly goals in the family, professional, and social dimensions using the SMART approach. Routinely, the author will review these goals, reflecting on the most significantly accomplished, and those yet to accomplish. During the review, and outcome of goal failure will be a pointer towards the likelihood of stress or an imbalance.  

Another strategy will be to self-administer the Nursing Student Stress Assessment Instrument (NSSAI) periodically. According to Mendes et al., (2019), this instrument uses a Likert scale comprising of 30 items grouped into six domains to assess for stress among nursing students. The outcomes of this self-assessment will help to further identify the physical, emotional, and mental symptoms of stress experienced by the author. The self-care routines that author can utilize to achieve balance will be; engaging in meditation and mindfulness to determine personal internal issues that can affect my actions and routines, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by limiting the intake of processed foods while focusing on natural foods and adequate hydration, having adequate and quality sleep to improve memory, mental processes, and mood, which are important in clinical nursing practice and education, and taking time to relax either by doing yoga, or other activities that relax the physical mind and emotional state. This helps to clear the mind and increase the receptivity to new challenges.
